Chapter Fifteen
Jordan
âWhy do I have to go to school? We only have Krampus for another week.â She was sitting on her bed, her arms crossed.
âBecause the roads are cleared and if you donât go, itâs considered being truant.â I sat down beside her. âYou know what truant means?â
âItâs when Jasper wonât go to school because he wants to play video games and Mr. Simon has to go to his house and go get him.â My jaw nearly dropped. How could a classroom with kids her age already have students who needed the principal to go get them?
âYes, that. And if Mr. Simon comes here, what will he see?â Her eyes went wide with terror. Being up on the side of the mountain so completely hidden away had us able to just be and not worry about Krampus being seen. Playing hooky, that was a different thing altogether.
âThey could come and hurt Krampus.â She got up and off the bed. âThat wouldnât be worth it. Iâll go to school and even do my work.â
âYou always do your work,â I reminded her.
âOf course I do. If I donât, Trudy isnât allowed to recess.â She grabbed her doll off the bed. âI better go get my quantity time with Krampus before we need to go.â
âQuality time? That means really worthwhile time. Quantity means a lot.â I stood up, ready to walk down with her.
âI already got us some quantity time.â She waggled her finger at me. âYou need to get us more. Itâs almost Christmas, and I donât have any more ideas.â
The sadness in her little face as she tried to take control of the situationâ¦it was almost too much.
âWeâll figure something out, honey. We will.â I just didnât know how, but she was right. We were running out of time and rapidly. âLetâs get you breakfast.â
âIâll race you.â
She won. I didnât even pretend to sprint. I needed a few minutes to pull myself together. When I got downstairs, she was eating her oatmeal, and Krampus was telling her all the fun things they could do when she got home. It looked like there were some crafts in my future and a whole lotta glitter.
âIâll be back in a bit. It sounds like I need to stop at the store on my way to get supplies.â
âIâll be here.â He smiled back at me. Maybe it was the amount of time weâd been spending together or maybe it was the lighting, but his toothy grin looked less deadly and more sweet today than it ever had. I wanted to reach over and kiss him. I didnât, of course. Not only was it inappropriate, but we had an impressionable audience.
Dropping Thea off was easier than I feared it might be. She wanted to keep him safe, to protect him, and if that meant going to school and missing some âquantityâ time, she was all for it. She was such a strong little alpha already.
I did stop at the store for gobs of craft supplies and some odds and ends that caught my eye.
